I would hope it would read from your iPhone if you had a rowing app on your phone. HR is accurately displayed reading from a NK chest transmitter by Bluetooth.

Is there an app for iPhone and Apple Watch that will display and record 500m splits, stroke rate and heart rate?

Sure enough my Apple Watch will connect to my Bluetooth NK transmitter.
