Duvall Hecht

Post by JD »

The great Duvall Hecht passed away today. Dewey was a Stanford oarsman who rowed the coxed pair in the ‘52 Olympics and took gold in the coxless pairs in the ‘56 Olympics with Jim Fifer.

Dewey founded the UC Irvine program by putting together supporters and university funding. Dewey coached the Anteater’s first crews and returned as business allowed to coach and support the program.

Dewey cofounded Books on Tape, which revolutionized the audiobook industry in the 1980’s. He also gave several people their start in coaching, including Bob Ernst and me, both of us UCI alums.

What a full life and passing of a historic man. Did he ever write a memoir?

There will be a memorial for Duvall Hecht on April 23 at UC Irvine boathouse.

This is open to the public, but please RSVP if you plan to attend so organizers have an idea what to plan for.
