7% of energy wasted to allow for rotation of the earth

Post by fatsculler »

See this tweet which clips a New Scientist talk from an Oxford University mathematician saying that over a 2K race (at UK latitudes) the rowers are pushed sideways by 40m due to the rotation of the earth and constantly, and subconsciously, adjust for this. He calculates that this uses up to 7% energy! (Also as an aside the video clip shows a bow-loaded 8)

and here is the paper

Cancels out the 40m sideways movement my cox manages to mess up by every race.

Explains how the GBR four finished the Tokyo race. They were not subconscious in the last 250.

I feel like 40m is a lot, and coxswains would be able to feel/see this kind of external force if they had to steer against it.

Well, if the water wasn't also moving along at the same rate, it would certainly make things harder! Fortunately we don't have to deal with water travelling at over 1500KPH *with relation to the boat*.
