John Squadroni

I saw this article from the Cal Women stating that John Squadroni passed last December. https://calbears.com/news/2023/12/12/former-cal-womens-rowing-coach-john-squadroni-passes Squad was probably unknown to most everyone on RI.He subbed for Ernst at UW and won a women’s national championship for Wa...

Re: 2023 Coaching Carousel

It's just more evidence of how obscure rowing is to the popular sports world. Add in that most boathouses are at a distance from the athletic department, if not off campus entirely. It's not uncommon for administrators to never darken the boathouse doors. Perhaps, in this respect, one could consider...

Re: Coaching Carousel 2023

Makes me laugh a bit when one understands the Harvard Endowment is over 50 billion dollars. They could fund the experiences of their students as much as they wanted and it would not dent the endowment. The remark may have made superficial sense, but most endowment donations tend to be earmarked for...

Re: ACRA

You're correct in the it's another pool of highly motivated athletes. I'd also add that that there some darn good coaches in ACRA.

Transfer Portal

With some of the news of rowers moving with their coach to a new university, I was struck by this news tidbit, in which athletes are apparently using the threat of transfer to have the university hold onto one of the coaches during a head coach change. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/west-vir...

I heard Ernst do the Big 10's and thought he was good. Dave Vogel has done Club Nats a number of times.

Re: 2023 NCAA Season

I was driving the Swiss judge at the 2017 Worlds in Sarasota when the Euros winning lwt Slovenian sculler flipped at about the 1250. He was freaked. The judge asked if he wanted out or remount and finish. He wanted out and another launch pulled him out, which is a dq. He later protested saying he th...

Re: Coaching Carousel 2023

High Point is putting 7 million in over the next few years. Not bad, but most colleges would have to spend a lot more starting up a field hockey or softball team. I know we all love to think about rowing as a real expensive sport, but we're a cheap date. I saw the High Point club folks today at Oak...

Re: San Diego State lawsuit

Bill At Stanford, When mens and women’s rowing and a few other sports went from clubs to “varsity”, it was made clear that we were on the lowest tier of a tiered system. They called it varsity three. The revenue sports were varsity one. Was anything like this ever explained to you as a department po...

Re: 2023 Season

SDCC puts on a stellar event. The beef from coaches is that it is consistently unfair, hence the seeding of lanes toward the viewing area. I had a varsity crew blow the heat and get stuck in lane six. I told them -well, I lied to them- that I didn’t know if lane six was a disadvantage, but I knew it...
