Time Trials at USRowing Regionals

Noticed from the results there were a significant number of Time Trials held on a Friday for SW Regionals. Is this a first for the SW event or the norm?

Looks like last year was the first year they did time trials, but only in the W4X and ML2x. The packet this year and last says "Time Trials: If a Youth Nationals qualifying event has more than 21 properly
submitted entries there will be a 1900M time trial"
