Rummel is the new head of Junior programming at Pelham Community Rowing Assn (New York).

Thoughts?

PCRA just lined up Reid Johnson- Princeton Intern Assistant- aswell. The two bring some heavy fire power to the nascent program. Strokes/Marin caliber by 2020???

It's possible, but there's a lot of competition in that region. They'd have to start getting kids from RA-Rye, Greenwich, Norwalk, Maritime in order to really get to that level.

Those programs almost all have very experienced junior coaches... big difference from being an Olympian to making awkward 15 year olds fast... I'd say it'll be a few years till it shakes out how fast PCRA can go. They also have a pretty high-powered parent board, from what I hear. Maritime, RA-Rye, Greenwich, Saugatuck are all run by pros who don't have to answer to parents. Helps enable good coaches to make successful programs.

Just because he was a good rower doesnt mean that it translates to being a good coach. Let's see how he does this year.

The brand of Rummell and even Reid will attract the most motivated talent in the area. Westchester parents will be keen to get their children, whether they be "awkward 15 years olds" or not, under the tutelage of a Harvard Olympian and a Princeton coach. Their brand will attract athletes playing other sports in the westchester/tri-state area.

Power junior rowing programs, for better or for worse, tend to propagate around wealthier areas in the midst of of larger corporate centers. Marin/Strokes of the Bay Area. SRC/Vashon/Everrett/Green Lake of the Seattle area. MRC of South Beach. CRI/Wayland Weston/Brookline of Boston. Newport/Longbeach of Greater LA. New Trier of Chicago.

It is in these types of neighborhoods where uber parents have the means and energy to bolster their children into the expensive and demanding sport of rowing. I have been surprised that Westchester County/tri-state areas hasn't yet produced a top tier junior rowing program. PCRA/Row America Rye/Greenwhich/City Island/Fordham have all been on to something. I project that Rummell/Reid will provide the tri-state area with a national-caliber junior program that is well expected for the area.

The issue with this in the Tri-State area is the same as around Philadelphia, most programs are run through the high schools and compete at that level. All the programs you mention, other than New Trier and Brookline take in kids from multiple schools.

Right now in the area Montclair seems to be the team on the rise and comes won Stotes & SRAAs in the V8 and took down Kent at NSRAs.

If you were to combine talent into one program per area (North Jersey, South Jersey, NY, CT, Philly) like much of CA and other areas do, the results would be VERY different

Your assertion that most programs within the tri-state area are school based is objectively wrong. While many prominent school teams exist (i.e. Fordham prep, Iona prep, Montclair, Don Bosco), the area's historical regional heavy hitters have all been club teams such as Row America Rye, PCRA (girls quad and lwt 8+'s in 2012-2013), Greenwich, City Island (lot of talk/hype surrounding these girls), Maritime, and, depending on your parameters of the tri-state area, Saugutuck. The clubs have been at the top and will be at the top.
