Between COVID and AD issues maybe it's time to move on and Thurstin makes that tenable.Norm wrote:Prettyinfiveseat wrote:Carter going somewhere else?rowSU wrote:Now interim HCJD wrote:Katie Thurstin from HC at Stetson to Iowa Assistant.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Carter is right. Lopiano is wrong. Someone needs to check herself before she wrecks herself.
Wherever you stand on women's rowing and NCAA, never let an outsider define the narrative.
If someone on the last seat in the bottom boat is showing up every day and working hard under professional coaching, then they COUNT. Period.
Roster size doesn't matter as long as the hours and attention are genuine.

And, what about inclusion?
How is that going to work with no novice program?

Re: Coaching Carousel
Part of Lopiano's beef is the novice designation. Does someone have to row before college to be counted? Rowing is unique in this respect. It's not so very complicated (no T-formation-left-sweep-on-two or low-post-double-twist), and that's part of it's "charm". Rowing is not a game, it's a discipline.Withoutmercy wrote:^like^

As for Carter, was his contract up in 2022? Word was he was at odds with the department (aren't they all). He's had success in part due to foreign athletes and like other programs, a lot those kids were at home last year due to travel. It's easy to work so friggin' hard and still see a cliff on the horizon caused by all the elements of department cutbacks, COVID, who knows what else. $127k is a pile of dough to give up, so it must have been serious. (https://govsalaries.com/carter-andrew-g ... -109322363 ) Wish the guy well. He made a whole lot of something out of a tough situation.
Thurstin will be fine at holding things down until the new sheriff arrives, but you want her to get seasoned on this level before giving her the reins. Despite good work at Drake and Stetson, the BIG10 is another animal altogether.

Re: Coaching Carousel
There are two possibilities.
1) This board is misunderstanding Lopiano, who is referring to "novice opportunities" to talk about the kids that row for 3 weeks, get counted for title ix purposes and then stop rowing. Someone who knows Iowa rowing better can weigh in, but 90-100 athletes does seem high.
2) She got paid 40k to not even make an attempt to understand collegiate women's rowing, and legitimately thinks there is some differentiation between the novice and "varsity" athletes, that makes novices illegitimate counters.
I want to give the benefit of the doubt, but based on the SWA's response I imagine it could be latter. SWA has incentive to back the department, but I also find it hard to believe they would refute the claims if they felt there were athletic opportunities truly being taken women.

Re: Coaching Carousel
Can you explain that last sentence? Katie Thurstin is an excellent coach in all senses and should be able to handle the rowing part. The Iowa-B1G part, I don't know, but <<in boca al lupo>> .Norm wrote:Part of Lopiano's beef is the novice designation. Does someone have to row before college to be counted? Re: Coaching Carousel
From what I know, Thurstin is a hard worker, seems like a nice person, is administratively strong, organized, takes care of her athletes and has pulled herself up by her bootstraps. She's had the opportunity to work with the Aussies when they were there. But I wonder if she's not unseasoned for this level. She's never worked for a top coach nor with top NCAA athletes nor has she recruited internationals (which Iowa needs) or top US athletes. She has little experience with crews needing to go BIG10 speed and has little associations with her conference peers (tough crowd). I think there might be another candidate from the assistant ranks with the chops. I would be happy to be wrong and if she were chosen and successful it would be a bit of a Cinderella story when you look at her history. I think she'd make a very good assistant.
