On a sad note, Dr. Christine Grant passed away yesterday. Dr. Grant was an extremely influential leader in the world of collegiate athletics and an outspoken advocate for Title IX. She was inducted into the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Hall of Fame in 2011 for her support of women's athletics in general and women's rowing in particular.
I became the head women's rowing coach at Sacramento State in July of 1996. I started work a week before the new athletic director, Judith Davidson. Judith had coached the University of Iowa field hockey team to an NCAA championship in 1986, during Dr. Grant's tenure as Iowa’s first director of women’s intercollegiate athletics. They remained close friends and colleagues. With Dr. Grant's support as a member of the first NCAA women's rowing committee, Sacramento State was selected to host the inaugural NCAA championship that was held on Lake Natoma in May/June 1997.
